CCPP Director Nisbet Gives Keynote at WAPOR 2025 on “The Emergence of the ‘Illiberal’ Voter?”

On May 18th at the 78th annual conference of the World Association of Public Opinion Research (WAPOR) in St. Louis, MO, CCPP Director Erik Nisbet gave an invited keynote speech on the topic of “The Emergence of the ‘Illiberal’ Voter? Comparative Analysis of American and Global Elections 2016–2024.” Drawing upon multiple U.S. election surveys conducted by CCPP since 2016 and the seventh wave of the World Values Survey, Nisbet showed how the understanding of democracy is increasingly being (re)defined in illiberal terms for a growing segment of voters in democracies globally. These shifts in democratic understanding are, in turn, shaping electoral politics worldwide and helping explain the popularity and electoral success of illiberal leaders and parties on both the right and the left.
